Krug, the “King of Champagne”

We all know Krug as a fine French Champagne but few would know that its founder is actually German. Born in Mainz, the then part of the French Napoleonic Empire, Joseph Krug left for Paris in 1834 where Germans were in demand as accountants and bookkeepers. Fast forward to 1843, Joseph Krug founded Krug et Cie was founded. Today, the brand is owned by global conglomerate Louis Vuitton-Moet Hennessey. However, the Krug family still plays a major role in decision-making.

Every bottle of the Krug Grande Cuvée is a blend of more than 120 carefully curated wines of 10 or more different years, some up to 15 years in age.

The deep golden colour and fine bubbles of the Krug Grande Cuvée sets it apart from the rest. Widely recognised as the “King of Champagne”, it is also rated one of the world’s best Champagnes by wine critics.

Thirty weeks after the harvest, the Krug Champagne is bottled in a single session. Once bottled, they are kept in the House’s cellars in Reims. What sets Krug apart from the other champagnes is the aging. Each bottle of Krug Grande Cuvée ages in the cellars for at least six years. Including the 6 years in Krug cellars, each creation requires at least 20 years to craft. Are we still surprised by the taste of the Krug Grande Cuvée?
